Aquaponics - NFT bureaucracy in Texas

Aquaponics - NFT bureaucracy in Texas On YouTube.

This is a simple video of my first aquaponics system. This is a continuous flow system that uses a bio-filter to change the ammonia (fish poo) to nitrates. Initially I did not have the outlet "stand pipe" on there so the water level in the tubes was very low. Since I added that, the plants are pretty perky.

Three-Stage Filtration Improves Taste and Odor
The filter's first stage traps sediment, like dirt, rust, and sand, while the second stage greatly reduces contaminants, pollutants, trace pharmaceuticals, and illness-inducing bacteria. In the final stage, water is filtered over natural minerals to give it a more refreshing taste. The result is water that looks, tastes, and smells cleaner.

Each PUR filter provides up to 100 gallons of clean water, and will typically last for two to three months.

Activated Carbon Microfilter Removes Contaminants
The second stage of filtration employs an activated carbon microfilter that removes most of the harmful contaminants commonly found in both municipal water sources and well water.

This filter removes 98 percent of chlorination by-products while also reducing the taste and odor caused by chlorine. The filter also removes 99 percent of heavy metals, like lead; industrial pollutants, like asbestos; trace pharmaceuticals, like antibiotics and antidepressants; and microbial cysts, like giardia and cryptosporidium.

User-Friendly Features and One-Click Installation
The filter's one-click installation requires no tools; it snaps onto your existing faucet (filter is not compatible with pull-out faucets). Removing a filter is just as easy--simply push a button. The filter swivels 360 degrees to give you better access to your entire sink.

A simple switch activates the filter and turns it off. For added convenience, this filter features a built-in electronic filter life indicator. The indicator flashes green, yellow, or red with use, so you'll know when it's time to update your filter.

Aquarium Algae Control by Bleaching, Cleaning Remove blooming beard & amber algae, diatom bleach Video Clips.

Algae control and cleaning for artificial coral reefs. Aquarium Algae Control, Aquarium Algae Removal by Bleaching, Aquarium Algae Cleaning, Remove green algae, brown algae, diatom, green hair algae with aquarium bleach. Many aquariums have a variety of nuisance algae, including brown algae, diatom, green hair algae in saltwater fish aquariums, and green algae in freshwater fish tanks. The most common and efficient aquarium algae control methods are by carrying out regular water changes, keeping algae-eaters, controlling light, reducing nitrate level, avoid over-feeding and over-crowding. A properly maintained aquarium should not have noticeable algae. Should nuisance algae appear on Instant Reef® Artificial Coral Reef décor, follow these simple suggestions: 1) Take artificial corals out of the aquarium, use low pressure water to flush, or use a soft brush to clean. 2) Labor-free algae cleaning by using algae eaters. For example: In saltwater tanks, marine snails crawl, algae is cleaned. Keeping snails at a rate of one snail per 10 gallons of water is sufficient enough. Astrea Snails, Margarita Snails are good candidates. In freshwater tanks, plecos and catfish are good candidates 3) Removing the Instant Reef® Artificial Coral Reef from the tank and letting it dry then placing it back in the tank is a way to turn the algae into healthy fish food. 4) Many professional aquarium contractors use bleach to clean Instant Reef® Artificial Coral Reef inserts, they think it is ...

How to Change the Water Filter on a Refrigerator

How to Change the Water Filter on a Refrigerator

Water Filter

To get the most benefit from the water filter built into your refrigerator (on refrigerator models that include water filtration for icemakers and/or chilled water dispensers), you should change the water filter cartridge on a regular basis. Most manufacturers recommend that you change your refrigerator water filter every six months in typical conditions. Some brands may recommend more frequent replacement of filter cartridges for heavier use. This insures that the filter is doing its best to remove chemicals, particulates and bacteria, along with any off tastes, from your ice and chilled drinking water.

Changing your refrigerator water filter is easy. All refrigerator water filter cartridges include easy to follow installation instructions. You can find the correct model number/part number for the water filter cartridge for your brand and model refrigerator by looking in the instruction manual that came with your refrigerator. Be sure to purchase the correct brand and model filter cartridge for your refrigerator.

In general, most refrigerator water filters are easy to remove. A quarter-turn to the left is all that is needed to unlock most filters. The old filter cartridge can be removed from the water filter housing. Then, the new filter cartridge can be inserted into position in the water filter housing. A quarter-turn to the right will lock the new filter cartridge into the filter housing.

Be sure to flush two or more gallons of water through the new filter as soon as it is installed and discard that water. Most refrigerator water filters use activated charcoal (or other carbon filtration) and some loose carbon or activated charcoal particles will be present in the first gallon or two of water that passes through the new filter. Flushing these particles out of the filter before use will insure that your water and/or ice will have no unwanted residue or off taste.

Some refrigerator brands/models may have filters located in their base grilles. Some of these types of filter cartridges may have reusable knobs that must be removed from the old cartridge and installed on the new cartridge before the new cartridge is inserted in the filter housing. Some refrigerators may use push button cartridges in their base grilles that pop out at the push of a button so that they can be fully grasped in order to be removed. This type of cartridge may use a cap that must be removed from the old cartridge and mounted on the new cartridge before the new cartridge is installed. Other refrigerators may have cartridges that are accessed from inside their refrigerator compartments, and some may have cartridges and housings that are covered by a plastic housing/access panel that must be removed with a wrench or by turning a knob to gain access to the cartridge.

Taking the time to replace the water cartridge in your refrigerator every six months will insure that your family is drinking clean water and has a clean ice all year round. If you purchased a refrigerator with this feature, it only makes sense to replace the water cartridges as recommended by the manufacturer to get the maximum benefit from the filtration.

Koi Pond - Filter Vs Fish

Koi Pond - Filter Vs Fish

Water Filter

There are many different types of filters available today for koi ponds which require regular cleaning. The decaying fish waste and pond debris need to be removed from the filter, flushed and cleaned with a garden hose - a labor intensive, stinky, filthy, disgusting job if there ever was one!

Biological filters are designed to filter out particulate and organic substances. By utilizing anaerobic bacteria-laden filter media, a bio-filter breaks down harmful toxic substances into harmless by-products. Busy koi ponds without a bio-filter will develop an environment harmful to its inhabitants as a result of the build-up of fish waste, decaying pond creatures and leaves and other debris that have settled to the bottom.

The size of the bio-filter used in a koi pond is in direct proportion to the number of fish per gallon. The more fish, the more waste and the bigger the filter that is needed. Do you really need a filter? Not necessarily on the small ones -- not if you follow nature's guidelines. Natural lakes and ponds don't have mechanical bio-filters and they are home to many healthy fish. If, however, the koi fish begin to overpopulate the lake and start running out of food, they would thin out naturally until the population was small enough to be sustainable by their environment.

Such a hypothetical overpopulation would cause an imbalance in the nitrogen cycle by producing too much nitrite from the koi fish waste. Then the increased pH of the water would create an algae bloom that could fill the lake and choke off the koi fish.

Man-made koi ponds can be controlled mechanically and chemically to allow for larger numbers of koi fish per gallon than would be found in nature. Many formulas exist for dictating the proper number of koi fish a pond can hold, whether you calculate koi fish per square surface foot, koi fish per cubic foot, koi fish per gallon, pounds per gallon, or pounds per cubic foot. The bottom line here is: healthy water equals healthy koi fish. If your water is fish-friendly, the number is insignificant, within reason.

If the air were pure, and if you had plenty of food and water, and a healthy way to eliminate, you could live in a small house with 30 other people and stay reasonably healthy, were it not for one thing: stress. Koi fish are like humans in that respect. If it gets too crowded, the koi fish will try to leave the koi pond and some actually do, but they do not get far. If koi fish are jumping out of a koi pond, it is not because they have an exploring nature; the koi pond is either too crowded or the quality of the water is less than desirable.

FILTER TECHNOLOGY

Man-made devices stretch the natural parameters set by nature, allowing the koi pond to support more life than it normally would. The biological filtering system is the best way to accomplish this. The more advanced the technology, the more effective its ability to treat water.

There are as many different types and configurations of filters as there are people wanting to get rich off manufacturing and marketing their own filters. Almost every koi pond or water gardening magazine contains more advertisements for filters than any other product. Which one is the best? First, let's discuss the various types that are available.

The most common filters are the up-flow, down-flow, submersible, recycling and pressurized types. The most common problem plaguing the operation of any filter is channeling. Water will always take the path of least resistance. Filters use a variety of filter media or material for the water to pass through. Pond water contains a large amount of suspended matter that collects in this filter media, eventually blocking or plugging the spaces between the material. As this occurs, the water will divert to another available path until it, too, clogs. Eventually, the water flow will find a permanent channel, avoiding the filtration process altogether until the media is removed, cleaned and replaced.

In the case of a down-flow filter, it operates on the principle of gravity, as opposed to pressure or up-flow. So when the media begin to clog, gravity is not sufficient to force the water through the available channel at the same rate that water is being pumped through, so it spills out the overflow drain back into the koi pond, unfiltered.

The most efficient and maintenance-free filters are pressurized filters that have a backwash feature. A bio-filter contains filter media on which nitrifying bacteria reside, and which break down the toxic nitrites into less toxic nitrates that can be used by the water plants. Consequently, the more surfaces that are available per square centimeter of material, the more effective the filter. Recent technology developed by Aqua Ultraviolet produces special hexagonal beads for their pressurized filters, which possess the greatest maximum available surface area of all existing filter media. They are tapered so that the beads are less likely to group together.

Back washing forces water through the filter in the opposite direction, breaking loose solid material and flushing it free down the drain outlet. Or, with the use of a flexible ribbed hose, it will direct the nitrogen-rich waste-water onto the lawn, trees or flowers. Maintenance involves a simple turn of handle for about one to two minutes. Down-flow or upflow and submersible filters require disassembling and washing of all enclosed media, and then returning it to the filter -- a very messy and dirty process.

Unfortunately, pressurized back-washable filters are costly and are designed for larger projects for use with out-of-pond pumps which are needed to adequately back-wash the filter. Thus, it is necessary to settle for the high maintenance, less effective down-flow or up-flow filters for smaller koi ponds of up to 300 gallons.

If you are one of those people who now have, or are thinking about building a small koi pond, I have great news for you! Thirty years ago when I started in this business, there were few small pond filters available. However, with the advent of the liner pond in the early nineties, everybody and his brother-in-law started manufacturing down-flow filters in their garage. With no marketing plan, capital, or quality craftsmanship, most all the fly-by-night-by-the-seat-of their-pants back alley filter hopefuls faded out. A filter for a 250 gallon koi pond will range from 0-0; for a 1000 gallon koi pond, 0-0; and for a 2000 gallon koi pond filter from 0-0.

Happy koi, peace and joy.

How to Make a Water Filter at Home

How to Make a Water Filter at Home

Water Filter

Learn how to make a simple water filter at home using the instructions given below. The water problem is acute in many leading cities in various industrialized countries too.

You can save the money you spend on buying bottled water and make a filter yourself.

Things You Will Need:
PVC or PolyVinyl Chloride (2 and 1/2 inch)
* 1 PVC end cap
* A drill machine
* A vinyl hose
* Poly Filter material

Here are the simple steps to make a water filter yourself.

1. Cut a small length of PVC Pipe.
2. Drill a hole in the end cap. It should be enough to match the insertion diameter.
3. Attach the end cap to the PVC pipe.
4. Now attach the vinyl hose to the end cap.
5. Here comes the PolyFilter Material. Take a piece of it and place it inside the PVC pipe where the water passes.

Make Sodium Nitrate, A Potassium Nitrate Substitute

Make Sodium Nitrate, A Potassium Nitrate Substitute Video Clips.

How to make sodium nitrate, which can substitute for potassium nitrate in almost all pyrotechnic purposes except flame color. Note: Sodium Nitrate is somewhat hygroscopic. Stuff you make from it such as pyrotechnic compositions should be used soon after making and not stored for extended periods of time. WARNING: Both procedures produce large quantities of ammonia gas. You have to do this experiment outside or in a fumehood. First get ammonium nitrate from an instant cold pack as seen in our previous video: www.youtube.com For the baking soda method. Get 80 grams of ammonium nitrate and dissolve it in 150mL of water. Filter it off directly into 84 grams of sodium bicarbonate, which is baking soda. Don't expect it to dissolve, it won't. Boil the mixture down to 100mL or less. This is needed to decompose the ammonium bicarbonate that's formed. You cannot simply evaporate the mixture. The boiling will release large amounts of ammonia so you have to do this outside or in a fumehood. Once it's boiled, leave it to evaporate until dry. Sodium nitrate will decompose if heated too strongly so you cannot boil it down all the way dry unless you can ensure the temperature never goes above 200 Celsius. Leaving a little water is the safest way to ensure the best product. For the sodium hydroxide method: Place 80 grams of ammonium nitrate in a tall container and pour 40 grams of sodium hydroxide on top. Then carefully pour 30mL of water and stand back. It will quickly react to generate ...
